What is Startup Weekend?

Startup Weekend is a global network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, teams and communities. Share ideas, form teams, and launch startups. The November event will no doubt bring out incredible ideas and create amazing new businesses. We’ll also learn a lot working together all weekend in beautiful Santa Barbara.

Kevin is a graduate of University of Michigan where he received a Bachelors of Science in electrical engineering with honors.

Klaus Schauser

Klaus is one of the original founders of AppFolio and brings his enthusiasm, leadership and experience to the team. When he’s not sharing his vision, validating new product offers or setting the strategy you can find him outdoors hiking or stand-up paddleboarding, enjoying the beauty of Santa Barbara.

Klaus was the Founder and CTO of Expertcity/CitrixOnline from 1999 through 2006 and was the visionary behind GoToMyPC, GoToAssist, and GoToMeeting. He led the teams responsible for building the products and their secure, reliable Software as a Service (SaaS) infrastructure. As a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Klaus is a widely published research scientist with extensive experience developing scalable, highly parallel computing environments. Klaus holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley and has received numerous academic awards.

Jon Funk

Jon is a veteran southern California venture capitalist and the founder of Ocean Road Partners, a venture capital fund in formation.

He has sourced and directed Series A venture capital investments that have created over $1.7 billion in liquidity for investors, including Sandpiper Networks (acquired in 2000 for $630 million), Rent.com (acquired in 2004 for $430 million) and Shopzilla (acquired in 2005 for $560 million), all southern California companies. He also currently represents Allegis Capital on the Board of Directors of ClariPhy Communications.

Jon is a Lecturer at the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management and the UCSB Technology Management Program. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Berkeley College of Engineering Annual Fund, and is on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Venture Association. He was inducted into the LAVA Hall of Fame in 2012.

He received an MBA from the University of Southern California as a Dean's List Scholar (’81), and a BS in Civil Engineering (’77) from the University of California at Berkeley.

He is a devoted Cal alum, as well as Michigan and Penn fan and proud parent. He is also a student of mathematics, guitar, surfing and history, with continual need for improvement in each.

Outside of Mix & Stir Studio, Mary Anne serves as a strategic advisor to companies of all sizes, from startups to larger corporations. She also spent several years in product and brand strategy at Microsoft, where she led product development, brand and user experience initiatives for Xbox, Windows, and Microsoft’s Corporate Marketing Strategy group.

Mary Anne serves as a mentor and advisor for the Incuba UC program, a startup program that brings top Latin American startups to the Bay Area, and has served as an advisor/judge for the Design MBA Venture Program at the California College of the Arts and for Hack City San Francisco.

Prior to AppFolio, Jon was the CTO of Versora (sold to Kaseya in 2006), providers of open source Windows to Linux migration software. Mike Franco

Doug Lynch

Doug was previously Managing Director of The REACH Group, a company he cofounded last century. Now retired and no longer living on an airplane, Doug lives in Santa Barbara and consults part-time with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), he is on the Board of Advisors of Synergy Business & Technology Center, SBCC’s Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and is an Instructor, Mentor and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at UCSB’s Technology Management Program. James A. Lisi, BSIE, MBA, CPIM

Mr. Lisi’s focus is small business, capital stock, and solvency-related valuations, business plans and free cash flow analyses related to start-up and fast-growing enterprises, and valuation of incentive stock options to meet IRC 409a. He also performs ESOP plan feasibility studies and analyses of intellectual properties and other intangible assets. He has valued businesses with AVM since 2004.

Mr. Lisi has an MBA from the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business and a BS Industrial & Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. He started work in his family’s Cleveland, Ohio based industrial distribution business as a teenager and then began his aerospace manufacturing and international product marketing career in Costa Mesa, California at a Fortune 100 firm after graduating college. Kip Lytel

Brian Gobrogge

Brian serves as a very hands-on President and CEO. Brian has almost 20 years experience in the industry and is very knowledgeable in materials and equipment involved in processing of microspheres and microstructures.

Previously Brian played leadership roles in Cbrite Inc and Gyricon LLC, where he was responsible for intellectual property, strategic alliance, finance and engineering.

Brian spent many years designing and installing custom equipment, launched seven digital display products, and started several brown field operations.

John Stump

John is a mechanical design engineer and avid inventor with over 15 years of design and product development experience. He has worked as an engineer, designer, inventor, machinist and independent consultant for several startups and various small local businesses.

John has launched several new products, including medical devices, consumer electronics and fitness equipment. In addition, he has helped clients develop new products in a diverse number of industries, including pet products, photography equipment and surgical instrumentation.

Danny Seigle

Danny joined the company in May 2011 after working as a consultant at Bain & Co. in San Francisco. Ivan Bercovich

Ivan Bercovich is the director of engineering at FindTheBest, the online research hub that helps people think like experts. Ivan joined the team in 2011 after leaving Cisco Systems in Silicon Valley due to a realization that he wanted to live out the true California experience and live by the beach. Jim Semick

Jim Semick is a co-founder of ProductPlan, web-based software that helps companies develop and communicate their product roadmap. For 15 years he has been an early-stage startup employee, entrepreneur, and advisor for the software industry. Jill Feldman

Jill Feldman is the President of Strategic Development Associates. SDA works with start-ups, mid-sized companies and large national companies, as a partner in market validation, industry analysis and competitive intelligence efforts. Jill founded SDA in 1997, following roles as Market Research Director and Marketing Director for AT&T Wireless Services and as Strategic Planning Manager for Verizon Wireless.

Bob Greenberg

Bob Greenberg is a high tech entrepreneur with over 25 years experience in growing companies and bringing complex technologies to market.

Bob is an active angel investor and member of the Oregon Angel Fund (OAF) and Tech Coast Angels (SoCal). He is currently serving on the boards of these companies: Columbia Power Technologies, Celly, and Sonoma Beverage Works.

Bob recently re-entered the startup fray by co-founding TablesUp. TablesUp enables restaurants to broadcast their current wait time to anyone with a smartphone.

Bob is a founder and former CTO of Pixelworks, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company that produces image-processing, system-on-chip ICs for high-definition, flat-panel displays (NASDAQ: PXLW).

Prior to Pixelworks, Bob was an Engineering Manager at InFocus, Inc., a leading manufacturer of business projectors. While at InFocus, Bob was responsible for many of the breakthrough products that made InFocus a market leader.

Bob received his BSEE from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and is named as an inventor of over 12 issued patents.

Juan Vasquez

Juan Vasquez is the communications coach and director of communications for URBAN Teens eXploring Technology, an organization that uses coding as a tool to inspire young men of color to be tech leaders. Casey Hare is the founder of Angstrom Designs, Inc. He is an expert in engineering systems, specializing in instrumentation and automation. He has developed software, electrical and mechanical systems for a wide variety of products, instruments and experiments.

In addition to consulting for a few highly technical businesses, Angstrom Designs works with NASA on instrumentation and testing for future generations of space-rated solar cell technologies. Additionally, Angstrom Designs has created a software driver that turns open-source Arduino hardware into a data acquisition platform.

Among Casey’s positions prior to Angstrom Designs, he has been a Vice-President of Engineering at Spectrafluidics, Inc., and founder of Multiprobe, Inc.

Casey personally designed and managed teams on a broad range of interdisciplinary problems, including Toyot'a first automated parallel parking system, digital X-ray systems, infrared spectral analysis instrumentation and automated cryogenic themocycling systems. He also teaches systems design, automation and robotics at University of California, Santa Barbara.

Casey holds bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and physics from UCSB and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering design from Stanford. He holds 4 patents and with numerous pending applications.

Brian David Crane

He started a recycling company at 16, which he used to pay his way through the University of Tennessee. After graduation, he sold it and went off to travel the world - only to land in Silicon Valley, where he learned how to profitably acquire customers thanks to his mentors at Inflection.com.

Nowadays his holding company invests in and brings to market e-commerce retailers and mobile apps whose brands he personally believes in.

To date, he's helped launch four different multi-million dollar web properties, including Archives.com (bought by Ancestry.com for $100m cash 3 years later) and LuckyGunner.com (now one of America's largest online ammunition retailers). He's currently focused on CallerSmart.com, a revolutionary iPhone app which eliminates unknown calls and texts through gamification.

Brian is an expert at hiring and coordinating offshore development & design teams. He's been able to blend his interests in traveling, economics, philosophy, and the beautiful game of futbol into being able to connect with talented people throughout this wonderful world of ours.

Mark Goldstein

Mark A. Goldstein is a partner of SoCal IP Law Group LLP. He has specialized in intellectual property law since 1999 after working as a civil litigation attorney. In addition to a practice that includes patent preparation, trademark acquisition, intellectual property licensing and related counseling, Mark renders patent and trademark infringement opinions, prepares intellectual property agreements, implements corporate patent programs, and develops trademark portfolios. He gained experience in the computer software business at Codex Corporation/Motorola Information Systems Group and Xerox Corporation.

While obtaining his law degree, Mark earned an Exceptional Achievement Award for his performance in an Intellectual Property Protection of Computer Software seminar. His technical experience includes applications software, networking software and devices, digital multimedia creation and broadcasting, and electronic commerce. Mark is a member of the International Trademark Association and the International Technology Law Association. Mark has presented talks on intellectual property at UCSB, Cal. Poly San Luis Obispo, California State Univ. Channel Islands, and Startup Weekend Santa Barbara.

Mark is a member of the California bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

Dean Nevins

Dean is currently a Dean of Educational Programs where he supports SBCC's Health and Human Services and Physical Education divisions. Additionally he is a Professor of Computer Science where he teaches courses and mentors students in video game programming for the PC and Nintendo DS platforms, Python, iOS, and web programming.

Dean consults on projects involving embedded systems and iOS and has written flight software for space projects, network stacks, instrument control software, as well as multiple apps for both local and national companies.

Dean has accumulated various degrees from Cal Poly, S.L.O. and UC Santa Barbara focused on circuit design (bachelors), robotics (masters), and computational geochemistry (Ph.D. in Geological Science).

Daniel Vitiello

She is the founding Executive Director of the Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Santa Barbara City College in California. Under Melissa’s direction, the Scheinfeld Center was awarded two regional designations and she serves as Director of both the Small Business Development Center and the Center for International Trade Development.

Melissa was born with a passion for teaching and continues to teach students in entrepreneurship. Her core philosophy for young entrepreneurs is spend more time doing and believes the two-year college setting is the perfect venue in which to kick-start entrepreneurs.

Melissa exercises her own entrepreneur muscle working on her new independent hotel brand and proprietary management system for independent hotel owners. For the past 20 years, as owner and CEO, she has run an independent hotel company in Arizona and Montana. She is the author of The Practical Guide to a Rapid Start-up (Launch Your Business in 20 Proven Steps). She also consults for small businesses and start-ups.

Prior to Bear Down Brands, Mat worked in online advertising and got his start in physical products by building an online store. Originally from Southern California, Mat attended University of Arizona to earn a Bachelors Degree in Marketing.
